the history.

victor lewis jr. was born in a small town near vancouver, bc. he grew up with his korean mother, suah or lila, who immigrated over in her early 20s and got married to victor lewis, a native american man who lived in his tribe's reserve. victor lived a happy life with both of his parents, despite the couple having very obvious problems in their marriage.
when victor was 3-years-old, his mother and father separated and were getting a divorce. victor's mother gained full custody over victor and they lived in vancouver, away from victor's father and his family. they lived with suah's sister, soojin, until suah was able to get a place for herself.
despite being devastated at his parent's divorce, victor didn't know enough about what was going on for him to try and get his parents back together. he accepted this, and his parents kept their relationship civil in front of him whenever they were together or spoke about the other. victor's mother would let victor go and see his father every once in a while.
victor didn't learn until much later that the reason why his parents divorced was due to his father's alcoholism. an unfortunately common problem with young native men ripped victor's family apart. his father would get really drunk and become unresponsive and cold. suah did her best at protecting victor from his father's binges. victor sr. would often disappear for days on end when he was drunk, but suah always lied to victor and told him that he had gone fishing with his brother or went hunting with his father.

when victor was 5-years-old his mother found a new husband and was pregnant with a child, her name was gyeoul "winter" lim, and she was to be victor's younger sister.
when victor was 10-years-old, it was reported that his father was found dead in his home. he had hung himself and left only a note that told victor to always listen to the coyote's cry when he needed his guidance. this was something victor's mother could not hide from him, and it had devastated victor for years.
victor went into a depressive slump for 18 months, no one would see him outside of his house other than his mother's sister. despite what many would think, his grades kept up and he did superbly well at school. he did all of his schoolwork at home, and he got the best grades in his class. probably why no one pushed him to go back to school except for his mother.
he also started to resent his mother and step-father for his father's death. he tried not to resent his sister for this but due to him going completely silent, he would refuse to speak to her.
one night, gyeoul begged victor to get better. she didn't understand what was truly going on because of how young she was. victor snapped. he screamed at her and said hurtful things he really doesn't remember. it took his mother and step-father to pull him away and snap him out of it for him to stop. victor couldn't stop crying and apologizing to gyeoul, pulling her into a close hug.
from that point on, victor tried to get better. he was very slow about it, but he believed that with time, he could heal.
one of the biggest step he first started to take was playing volleyball with his step-father. victor's original love for volleyball came from his father, who was one of the best players in his high school's team. but victor's step-father inspired him to do better and achieve his father's dreams by watching his step-father's dedication to learning how to play so the two of them could bond and victor could find his passion again.
victor ended up joining his high school volleyball team, and he led the team to winning national championships.
despite the high that victor was experiencing in his high school volleyball, his parents decided to move back to korea due to the death of yeongtae's mother. victor barely knew any korean, but he went to an international school so he was able to make friends easily and through volleyball. eventually, victor became one of the top players in the country.
